Genesee Community College's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society inducted new members at the Celebration of Excellence held on Tuesday, May 8 in the new Richard C. Call Arena. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through scholarship, leadership, and service.

Membership in the Honor Society requires a 3.25 overall GPA and a 3.5 GPA specifically for Legal Specialty Courses. The GCC Lambda Chi (LEX) Chapter is newly chartered in 2018.

Two SUNY Potsdam students were recently inducted into Kappa Alpha Omicron, the international interdisciplinary environmental studies honor society, during a ceremony held on April 24.

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline honor society. The Society's mission is "to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others." Membership to Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students, along with faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Each year, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the International Honor Society for two-year colleges sponsors the All-State Community College Academic Team with 38 states participating from across the nation. The scholastic program honors outstanding students through a competitive application process that includes a comprehensive essay revealing how each team member has immersed themselves in their community to have a positive impact. Genesee Community College's Phi Theta Kappa honor society inducted its 52nd group of members on Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Batavia Campus.

Genesee Community College's Phi Theta Kappa honor society inducted its 51st group of members on Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Batavia Campus. Genesee's chapter, Alpha Iota Upsilon, was founded on February 15th, 1985 by Dr. Bernie Hoerbelt, long time advisor of PTK and retired professor of Mathematics. To date, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) has inducted over 2,400 students at Genesee. Director of Student Activities and recent award winner of the PTK Distinguished Administrator award, Cliff Scutella, was the key note speaker at the ceremony. Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society serves to recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through honors, leadership, and service programming. To be eligible for membership, a student must complete a minimum of 12 hours of associated degree course work and earn a grade point average of 3.6 or higher. Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college, a 3.3 GPA. Local inductees, as well as their hometowns, are listed below.

Not only was he instrumental in developing Phi Theta Kappa at the College, but also in the development of Genesee Community College from its beginnings."
