Orientation Leaders (OLs) are current students who work over the summer as GCC ambassadors assisting with summer orientation programs for first-time or transfer students, and their parents & family members. OLs continue to serve throughout the year as mentors and share their experience as successful students to aid in the transition process for incoming students.

More than 400 Buffalo State students presented their own research or creative work at the annual Student Research and Creativity Conference held on campus in April 2017. Students from many academic disciplines including art, business, education, science, and technology explained their work using posters or presentations. Students used gallery and performance space to demonstrate work in the performing and visual arts.

The State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have demonstrated the integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives, which may include leadership, campus involvement, athletics, career achievement, community service or creative and performing arts while maintaining a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.8. Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the SUNY Chancellor's Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended and finally approved by the Chancellor to become recipients of the prestigious award. Each month, one student is awarded the honor for outstanding academic performance and campus engagement.

On May 9, 2014, over 120 students were recognized for a variety of achievements at the 25th Annual Student Awards Banquet. The Student Awards Banquet is hosted by Student Activities at the end of each academic year. The event celebrates student achievement, athletic successes, club and organization involvement, and success in Student Government and Student Activities.
