Library Improves Access to 60 Times More Materials

Students at GCC Benefit from New SUNY System

Batavia, NY (07/23/2019) — As many in New York State were preparing for picnics and celebrations on July 3rd this year, the staff of the Alfred C. O'Connell Library at Genesee Community College were busy implementing a new platform to give students simplified access to every resource in the entire SUNY network of libraries at 64 college campuses!

Implemented by the State University of New York (SUNY), the new Alma Library Services Platform and Primo Discovery Service are now active in every library throughout the system to benefit each campus and to leverage system-wide resources. Such resources include not only books and reference materials, but electronic books, e-journal subscriptions, audio and visual materials, science models and much, much more.

"This new infrastructure allows all campus libraries to share and manage resources collaboratively, while providing a better user experience," said SUNY Senior Vice Chancellor and Provost Tod A. Laursen. "As a result, all SUNY faculty, staff and students will have the ability to search the entire SUNY collection and request items to be shipped to their campus with a standard semester long (16 week) loan."

"Transitioning to the new system, called 'Alma/Primo', went smoothly thanks to the work of everyone in the library, but especially Michelle Eichelberger and Cindy Francis. We are excited to see our summer session students already finding it easy to use and navigate," said GCC's Director of Library Services Jessica R. Olin. "Suddenly being able to make all of these resources exponentially easier to access is exciting and we are thrilled to have been part of such a successful change."
