GCC Theatre Presents Experimental Comedy Production, "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind"
Batavia, NY (11/06/2026) — The Genesee Community College Department of Theatre Arts and The Forum Players present Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, written and created by Greg Allen and directed by GCC Theatre faculty member Sandy Nagar. Performances will take place November 12 at 7:30 p.m.; November 13 at 7:30 and 10:00 p.m.; and November 14 at 2:00, 7:30 and 10:00 p.m. in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at Genesee Community College, One College Road, Batavia, NY 14020.
Created by Chicago's Neo-Futurist Theatre, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind premiered in 1988 and is recognized as the longest-running show in Chicago history. This fast-paced, experimental production challenges traditional theatre with its unique format of "30 Plays in 60 Minutes." Each performance features 30 two-minute plays that range in style and tone from hilarious to thought-provoking, traditional to avant-garde. The order of the plays is determined by the audience, creating a different experience every time.
Audience members receive a menu of play titles and corresponding numbers. As they call out numbers, performers select the matching titles from a clothesline onstage, announce "GO," and launch into the next scene. An onstage timer keeps the action moving toward the 60-minute finish line. Presented in an intimate black-box theatre/comedy club setting, with the audience seated onstage, the production incorporates sketch comedy, improvisation, physical theatre and audience participation. Scenes may also be added or dropped between performances, ensuring no two shows are alike.
Seating is general admission and is not assigned. Tickets are available at the door only; no advance sales are offered. The Box Office opens one hour before each performance. Ticket prices range from $6 to $11 ($5 plus a roll of the dice), with audience members playing an interactive game with cast members to determine their ticket price. GCC students receive free admission with a valid student ID. Cash is appreciated when purchasing tickets.
The production is recommended for ages 13 and older due to mature themes and occasional strong language. The performance runs approximately 60 minutes with no intermission.
