GCC Student Artists Showcase Creativity in "Reflect: GCC Fine Arts Student Exhibition" at Roz Steiner Art Gallery

Batavia, NY (03/09/2026) — The Rosalie "Roz" Steiner Art Gallery at the Genesee Community College Center for the Arts presents Reflect: GCC Fine Arts Student Exhibition, on view now through April 2, 2026, at GCC's Batavia campus. The annual exhibition highlights the creativity and technical skills GCC students have developed in their art classes, featuring work that explores observation, abstraction, mixed media, portraiture, and artistic imagination. The show includes pieces created in Drawing 1 and 2, Painting 1 and 2, Ceramics 1, 2-D Design, and 3-D Design courses. Artist receptions will be held Thursday, March 12 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with refreshments served at both events, and the gallery will remain open between receptions for those who prefer to view the artwork during a quieter time. Gallery hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The 2026 exhibit is one filled with vibrant color and exquisite texture. Inspiration for student work was found in nature, architecture, animals, and anatomy studies. The ceramics display is dominated by the influence of animals, with vessels made to mimic the forms of creatures domestic, fantastical, and extinct. The ceramics students utilize the coil method, carving methods, sculpture techniques to bring their projects to life, while utilizing underpainting and glazing techniques to add decorative flair. Charcoal, graphite, colored pencils, oil pastels, paper collage, acrylic paint, and oil paint were all media used to create the 2D projects featured in this exhibit. One student even found an innovative way to use lipstick as a drawing material.

The title, Reflect, was chosen to encourage the students to think about the progress they have made this year. Art is often used as a means for introspection. A recent study, initiated by the charity Art Fund and co-funded by the Psychiatry Research Trust, found that viewing original artwork has immediate benefits. By measuring the physiological responses of the body, researchers found that art activates the immune, endocrine, and autonomic nervous systems all at once. This means our minds and bodies destress, and become engaged and excited when viewing artwork. This allows our minds to clear and to reflect on the message of the art, while connecting it to our own personal lives. Art is a tool that can be used to promote contemplation.
