"Complete Streets" Workshop Coming to GCC

Walking and Biking Enthusiasts Invited to Community Discussion

Batavia, NY (08/22/2019) — As progress on the Ellicott Trail hiking and biking path continues, the opportunity to discuss the next phase of pedestrian and bicycle -friendly walkways is already scheduled. A "Complete Streets Workshop" is being held on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, 6-8:30 p.m. at Genesee Community College in the Conable Technology Building in room T121.

The workshop opportunity presented itself to GCC through GobikeBuffalo and a grant this group received to encourage communities to assess the walkability and bikeability of their region, as well as to inspire leaders to explore possibilities, and discuss practical planning and/or policy making. The workshop will include a short presentation, a "walkability audit" and a follow-up discussion that may help us envision how the Ellicott Trail could one day connect to a wider network.

City, town and county planners, elected officials, decision-makers, business leaders, as well as students, faculty and staff, hiking and biking enthusiasts, and those interested transportation options and safety should attend.

Interested participants should email their plan to attend to Donna Rae Sutherland, director of GCC's Marketing Communications Office at dsutherland@genesee.edu. The event is currently scheduled in a room designed to accommodate 35 people, but can be readily relocated to a larger space as needed with advance notice.

"As a person who regularly rides a bicycle to work and travels down Hawley Drive, it is often unnerving to have trucks and cars pass you at 55 miles per hour," Sutherland said. "This workshop will help us envision many different opportunities to better connect or create safer pathways from the College to the City of Batavia, potentially with the new Ellicott Trail."
