Global Education Club Focuses on Food & Cultural Identity

Genesee Community College Announces Lecture Series

Batavia, NY (09/07/2018) — Each year, Genesee Community College's Global Education Committee carefully selects a topic with broad interest, scope and impact to explore and share with the College community through a variety of special events and opportunities. This year, the group has identified "Food and Cultural Identity" as the theme for its Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 lecture series.

The series kicks off on September 20, 2018 with "Food Sustainability Challenges - Local and Global," a lecture by Karen Huffman, Ph.D. associate professor of Biology at GCC. From 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. in room T102 of the Conable Technology Building, Dr. Huffman will explore the question of whether or not there will be enough food in the future to sustain the ever-growing global population.

Dr. Huffman joined GCC in January 2011 and teaches Fundamentals of Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Nanotechnology, Human Disease and Genetics. She is also co-chair of the GCC's Sustainability Committee. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to Genesee, she taught at Mount Mercy Academy, Buffalo State College, Erie Community College and conducted research at the University of Buffalo.

The next lecture under the "Food and Cultural Identity" theme will be held on October 16, 2018 from 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. GCC's Professor of History Charles Scruggs will lead a discussion on "The Food Explorer - The True Adventures of a Globe Trotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats," a new historical non-fiction title written by Daniel Stone about David Fairchild who traveled to over 50 countries between 1894 and 1904 and transported thousands of plants to American soil.

The lectures are free and open to the public. All series events are posted on the College's website at www.genesee.edu.
