GCC's Annual Security Report Posted Online

Sixty-page Document Features Clery Act Crime Statistics for Potential Students to Consider

Batavia, NY (11/14/2017) — The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act was a landmark federal law passed in 1990, four years after the horrific rape and murder of student, Jeanne Clery in her Lehigh University dorm room. Clery's parents were instrumental in establishing this disclosure act believing that Jeanne would have been more cautious had she been informed of the other violent crimes committed at Lehigh.

Today, this important act serves to make current campus safety information readily available to the public. Prospective students and families can review this data and make accurate comparisons between colleges when selecting an institution for higher-education. The Clery Act regulates policy disclosure, records collection and retention and information dissemination. The act requires colleges to track specific crime statistics and to make reports of those statistics available publicly every year.

Genesee Community College is pleased to share its 2017 Annual Security and Fire Report which highlights reported crime incidents in 2016, or lack thereof. These reports include incidents reported on campus, at the College Village, at all campus centers and on public property adjacent to campus locations.

"When the statistics for the Batavia Campus and all seven campus centers are combined, we can see the general safety patterns emerge," said Stephen Wise, director of GCC's Campus Safety Office, and also a Peace Officer. "All in all, our locations have little to no reported incidents in the major categories of concern, such as murder, negligent manslaughter, sexual predatory crimes, assault, arson and domestic violence. In addition, we have taken steps and worked with involved individuals to resolve isolated incidents that had been reported in previous years," he added.

The 59-page Annual Security Report for 2017 includes crime statistics for 2014, 2015 and 2016. Statistical reports begin on page 30 with the Batavia Campus and College Village report, and continues through page 51 covering all of GCC's related locations where students are actively engaged in the learning process.
