GCC is Coordinating a Spring Clean-up Crusade

All Seven Campus Locations Involved

Batavia, NY (04/17/2019) — It's been called the flotsam and jetsam of winter. The snow is gone and left behind is a build-up of trash of all kinds, blown in from all directions and from an array of different resources. From the ubiquitous cigarette butt to the chronic beverage container or fast food wrapper, and everything in between-a season's worth of trash is littering the edges of our highways and byways, as well as parks and public spaces.

In honor of Earth Day, the Sustainability Committee of Genesee Community College is organizing a street or park clean-up on Thursday, May 2, 2019 during "Common Hour" which is from 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. All seven of GCC's campus locations are coordinating a specific clean up event in their own community!

In addition to cleaning the shoulders of the road and/or a public space, clean-up crews will be using repurposed plastic bags as much as possible adding to the environmental friendliness of the effort. Fifty pound dog food, garden soil, grain, seed and other large size plastic bags are being sought for this cleaning crusade.

"This type of plastic bag is perfect for litter pick-up," Donna Rae Sutherland, associate director of Marketing Communications and a member of the Sustainability Committee said. "Not only are we giving a one-use plastic bag a second purpose, but these bags are stronger, stay open better, don't easily rip, and they are the perfect size. Try lugging a filled, 42-pound contractor bag down the road and you'll appreciate the smaller size. Trust me on this one!"
