College Application and Scholarship Search Assistance Available at the AEOC

Batavia, NY (10/29/2018) — The Adult Educational Opportunity Center (AEOC) and Genesee Community College are pleased to announce a new website feature providing a complete calendar of AEOC support workshops, financial aid sessions, College Entry Point events and more.

One of the primary focuses of the AEOC this season is the "Common Application," a.k.a. the Common App, which is a standardized application that can be completed and used to apply to multiple colleges or universities at the same time. The Common App has been adopted by over 800 colleges and universities worldwide as an admissions application tool. Each year more than one million students use it to submit more than four million applications. With such growing acceptance, the AEOC is now offering free Common App workshops to guide and technically assist any students as they develop and refine their application. Students are invited to make an appointment or walk-in to these assistance sessions to complete their applications. Perhaps one of the most helpful nuances of these workshops is encouraging students to attend as often as needed to ensure their applications are memorable for all the right reasons! Any student interested in attending a Common App session should contact the AEOC office at 1-888-394-2362 or via email at AEOC@genesee.edu.

"Our outreach specialists at the Common App assistance workshops help students overcome all kinds of challenges to the application process," Kate Trombley, director of the AEOC said. "From basic technical system and computer support to the mechanics of crafting a powerful and impressive application essay, the AEOC staff is ready to help." Further details as well as the online application form can be found at https://www.commonapp.org/.

In addition to Common App support, the AEOC is an excellent resource for scholarship searches. The experts at the AEOC are available to help students of any age find and apply for scholarship from thousands of available sources. Scholarship search assistance is a free service available at any of the Common App workshops, as well as during other AEOC events. Details on scholarships available specifically at Genesee Community College are available at https://www.genesee.edu/home/offices/finaid/scholarships/ . Applications for GCC scholarships are being accepted now through November 1, 2018 for the first round of considerations.

One of the most popular workshops the AEOC offers are the "FAFSA Fests" (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). During these sessions, anyone can receive help in completing the FAFSA and TAP (Tuition Assistance Program) forms. During November, the AEOC has more than seven FAFSA Fests scheduled to take place throughout the region including at GCC's Arcade, Lima, Warsaw, Dansville and Batavia campus locations. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the AEOC office at 1-888-394-2362 or via email at AEOC@genesee.edu to reserve a seat in any session and to learn about what information and materials are required for participation.

All of the AEOC services are free and available to anyone, not just students of Genesee Community College. With dozens of events taking place throughout the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming Counties, the AEOC is readily available. For a complete list of AEOC workshop and other events, visit the new calendar of events online at https://www.genesee.edu/home/adult-learners/adult-education-opportunity-center/aeoc-calendar-of-events/.

To accommodate today's busy schedules, the AEOC also offers "Mobile Assistance." Representatives from the AEOC set up a "mobile office" in an assigned space such as room in a library, school district, YMCA, YWCA, community center or faith-based facility in order to assist students, adults or community members in starting their college entry process. Assistance can include financial aid applications, scholarship research and application, admissions preparations, refining essays, Accuplacer testing practice and much more!
