GCC Orleans Advisory Council Gets the Latest News

The GCC Albion & Medina Campus Centers' Advisory Council meeting was held in Medina on October 28, 2019

Batavia, NY (11/05/2019) — Medina, NY- For over two decades, Genesee Community College has benefited from the sage advice of Orleans County community partners via the GCC Albion and Medina Advisory Council. The Advisory Council met on October 28, 2019, at the Medina Campus Center, and several presentations were provided and many important topics were discussed.

The Albion and Medina Advisory Council is comprised of school superintendents, county legislators, community leaders in businesses and nonprofit organizations, and GCC staff and faculty. The Advisory Council Chair, Orleans-Niagara BOCES Superintendent Clark Godshall, always makes a point of how valuable and productive these biannual meetings are, "The participating superintendents are always very impressed with the high quality programs that are tailored to the needs of both our current and post high school student populations."

John McGowan, GCC's new BEST (Business Employees Skills Training) Center Director, presented information on the recently held "GLOW with Your Hands" (Genesee-Livingston-Orleans-Wyoming) program where the BEST Center highlighted its FAA-approved Drone Program. John also made the council members aware of ongoing Department of Labor Safety Grants, business collaboration efforts including the Mechatronics program administered by CNC Technical Solutions in Medina, and numerous upcoming employee training opportunities including LEAN Yellow Belt.

Lina LaMattina, GCC's Director of Business and Commerce academic programs, highlighted some academic degree programs including Business Administration, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Marketing, Supply Chain Management and Medical Administrative Assistant. She also spotlighted several niche courses available to the public ranging from Business Communications to Entrepreneurship and Public Procurement. Lina emphasized the high-tech aspects of the college's approach to providing access to students including options ranging from in-class courses, online courses, video-linked courses and "Hyflex" combinations involving a hybrid of several teaching modalities.

Amy Schrader, GCC Medina's Student of the Semester for Spring 2019, gave a captivating testimonial about how her goal of entering GCC's Registered Nurse program next year is keeping her motivated enough to be able to balance family, a full academic load, and multiple 13-hour shifts at the Medina Hospital as a licensed practical nurse each week. Amy's story really impressed the council members. When she was asked what advice she has for her fellow students, she said, "Work hard, don't give up and have perseverance. It's going to be worth it!"

Jim Simon, the associate dean of GCC's Orleans campuses, provided the advisory council updates on enrollment, outreach programs, community connections and the recently completed wellness survey of students, staff and faculty. "I look forward to these meetings and all of the discussions that take place before, during and after. We cherish our council members and always benefit from their insights."

Overall, GCC has 22 different advisory councils comprised of 422 members. These community partners volunteer to help GCC meet and exceed expectations and underline the College's "middle name," Community.

Among the many new initiatives that the Orleans Campus Centers have introduced in the prior year was the new student orientation. A team of Orleans County GCC students worked closely with the staff to help ensure that all new, incoming students not only felt welcomed at the campus centers but were well on their way of making many new friends.

With more than 65 affordable degree and certificate programs, online courses, Hyflex learning opportunities and seven campus locations, GCC makes it possible for anyone to achieve his or her higher education dreams. And with the Albion and Medina campuses, students in or near Orleans County can take advantage of our accredited SUNY college close to home!
