CSTEP Scholars Conference Adds a New Dimension to GCC's Annual Veterans Day Open House

Batavia, NY (11/08/2019) — Attending college open houses are nearly a rite of passage for many students who have their sights on college after earning their high school diploma. In addition, exploring and entering programs that lead to careers in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and healthcare is a nationwide priority. While these two factors are a significant undercurrent in today's culture, there are many young adults, particularly from economically disadvantaged homes who remain outside this realm of opportunity.

That is why Genesee Community College's has added a dynamic new dimension to its Veterans Day Open House happening at the Batavia Campus on Monday, November 11, 2019. The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) along with the Adult Educational Opportunity Center (AEOC) have planned the CSTEP Scholars Day of Service featuring three sets of workshops with numerous special guest speakers from GCC and the local community all with expertise in various STEM related industries. With 97 regional high school students involved in various programs that enhance and encourage access to higher education, the day-long event helps build another bridge of opportunity.

Highlights of the full-day schedule include the following speakers: Brian Kemp, owner of T-Shirts Etc.;

Erin Pence, GIS analyst with Genesee County Department of Planning; Chris Suozzi and John Jakubowski with Genesee County Economic Development Center; Janet Schmidt, GCC CADD instructor; Charles Malone with Cornell Cooperative Extension; Greg Sharpe, GCC Food Processing Technology/Human Nutrition instructor;

Marina Cappellino, former GCC Computer Networking instructor; and Ron Schumacher, GCC Engineering Science instructor.

Since 1986, CTEP has been helping to prepare science and technology licensed professionals in New York State with resources such as financial support, peer and professional tutoring, academic and career workshops, educational field trips, assistance with securing job shadows, research opportunities and individualized advisement sessions. Some students in the program also experience the summer bridge program, pilot research and participate in local internships or present at conferences. Many CSTEP students become strong leaders in their industry, and most transfer to a four-year college or university, eventually seeking employment.
